Job charnock, who is considered to be the founder of Kolkata could hardly have imagined that this city would turn
into today's mega polis of over 10 million people. About 3 centuries
ago when Kolkata was founded, the river was a major factor in
trade and commerce settlements founded by the British, the French,
the Dutch, and the Portuguese.
Kolkata rose to the eminence of being called "The Second
City of the British Empire. Kolkata is the most complex of all
the Indian cities and first impressions can be misleading. One
has to live in Kolkata to understand and enjoy it. The number
of flights to and from Kolkata to other major destinations and
the eastern / north eastern region have also increased. Through

Important places for sight seeing include Raj Bhavan now the residence of the Governor. Town Hall funded by the famous 'Kolkata Lottery' carries on the palladian
tradition of the government houses. High Court built around
1872 was designed by Walter Granville. B.B.D Bagh named after three young freedom fighters- Benoy, Badal, &
Dinesh, is a square built around the old Lal Dighi tank.
Howrah Bridge the third largest bridge in the world.
Eden gardens is a maiden which has witnessed many a
famous cricket battles. Victoria Memorial is
the most imposing & monumental 'dream in marble'. On the
other side of the memorial are the Birla Planetarium, the magnificent St. Paul's Cathedral, & Academy of Fine Arts.
