Khajuraho has always remained tucked away from the mainstream
events of history. The main attraction for tourists is the group
of temples as well as the history of the Chandela dynasty, during
whose era they were built. It is agreed that they were built
between 950 A.D and 1050 A.D The sculptures, considered to be
the most perfect figures achieved in stone, depict gods and
goddesses and amorous couples. A much-publicized Dance
Festival is held here every March. Daily flights connect
Khajuraho with Delhi and Varansi. The temples are divided into
three categories of which the western is the largest and best
known.
All
but three temples, which are built of local granite, are constructed
with hard river sandstone dug from the east bank of the Ken
River, 20 Kms east.
The
first temple to the visit in the western group is the Lakshmana.
At the centre, is the magnificent Kandariya Mahadev .This, the largest and grandest of the temples. The eastern
group is easily reached by rickshaw with the return journey
making a pleasant walk . It comprises mostly Jain temples withen
a compound . The largest jain temple is the fine Parsvanath,
with its famous sculpture of a women applying alta to her foot
. The adjacent Adhinatha Temple has three band
of fine sculpture.
