King Jambulochan founded the city of Jammu which he called 'Jammu
Nagri' and transferred his capital to the new city from the Bahu fort. Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu &
Kashmir state is perched like a guard. It also has great importance
as a communication center, being the railhead for the entire
Jammu & Kashmir and the starting point for visiting the
holy shrine of Vaishno Devi at Katra. Jammu
is on the flight network of all major Airlines in India. There
are several temples in this charming city, but none as beautiful
as the Raghunath temple in the heart of the
city.
Ranbireshwar
Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Another Shiva shrine
of repute is Peer Khoh, a cave shrine. Bahu
Fort just outside the city, by the banks of the river
Tawi, was constructed by the Dogra rulers of the state. Around
the fort now are the Bagh-e-Bahu gardens with
there impressive city views. A good picnicking point is Ranbir
Canal in Akhnoor. Hugging a turn on
the bend of river Tawi is the Amar Mahal Palace Museum.
Another
museum is Dogra Art Gallery. Places around
Jammu where visitors can spend a day, or take longer breaks
are Akhnoor(32km), a picnic spot on the river
Chenab. Batote (120km), a health resort on
Jammu-Srinagar Highway. Kud (102km), Mansar Lake (80km), Purmandal (39km), Ramban (148km), Surinsar
Lake (42km) & Kishtwar High Altitude park(248km)
are some other places worth a visit.
