Little
remains of the beautiful city of karnavati on the banks of the
river Sabarmati, where the sultan Ahmed Shah transferred his
capital from Patna in the 15th century, laying the foundation
of Ahmedabad, a walled city that is still one of the greatest
in India. In recent times, Ahmedabad has gained fame as the
"Manchester Of India" for its textile industry.
Ahmedabad
is the perfect place to begin a tour of Gujarat & from here
you can choose from various circuits in Saurastra, North Gujarat,
South Gujarat & Kutch. It is now one of the most economically
developed cities in India. Ahmedabad is well connected to both
Delhi & Mumbai via Air. Ahmedabad is well connected by rail
to most state capitals & important rail-heads of India.
State Transport Corporation connects Ahmedabad to all major
towns, cities & pilgrim centers in Gujarat. The Islamic
era of Ahmedabad saw the erection of many magnificent mosques
& mausolea in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style. Jama
Masjid described as the most beautiful mosque in the
East. Other interesting monuments of the Sultanate period are
the Rani Sipri's Masjid, Haibat Khan Mosque, Ahmed Shah's
tomb.
North
of the city walls, but also east of the river Sabarmati, you
see the Huteesign Jain Temple Complex, containing
54 beautiful marble shrines, the Shahibagh Palace of Shah Jehan which now houses a memorial
to Sarder Patel, & the Sabarmati Ashram of
Mahatma Gandhi. On the other side of the walled city is the Kankaria Lake. The well stocked Kamla
Nehru Zoological Park, the Balvatika Children's Park are centered around the lake.
